If you want to organize your own Photowalk you have to understand that the first and most important decision that you have to make is about the location and the route.
You need to choose a city or route not to far from where you live and do a little research about parking lots and restaurants in that area.
You also want a route that offers you and the other photographers some nice things to take pictures like; buildings, bridges, railroad, parks, beaches, etc.
Now that you selected the location and the route, let's check few other details to make your Photowalk a success.
Date and Time:
It is a good idea having the Photowalk on a Saturday or Sunday (most people don't work on weekends). I prefer to organize my Photowalks in the morning around 9:00 am, so the people would have plenty of time to have a good breakfast and drive to the location. You can also organize your Photowalk late afternoon or early evening, that is your choice.
How to find people to participate of your Photowalk:
You have to make people know that you are organizing a photowalk on your area. You should write some posts on your blog, invite other blogers, write some emails to few different camera clubs and associations and etc. Another good way to let people know about your Photowalk is to write and article to your local Newspaper, TV stations and Radio Stations.
Equipment:
Bring your camera (SLR or Point and Shoot). Don't forget your bag, cards, batteries, lenses and etc. You don't need an external flash or a tripod, but it is your choice to bring them or not. You are going to be walking for one or two hours (go easy on how much stuff you want to bring with you).
Last Details:
You have to remind the photographers from your group that Photowalk is an outside event and they should bring some water, snacks, a hat, appropriate clothing, sun block, comfortable shoes and etc.
My Personal Tip (When I organize my Photowalks):
- I generally buy some name tags so every photographer can write his or her name on it (better than have to keep asking people's name).
- I ask some local small business' owners for some prices that I can give to the photographers (sponsorship) in exchange for their name in my blog.
- I always get 20 to 30 minutes earlier at the location designated for the Photowalk.
- I like to take pictures of the group together
- I try don't think too much about my own pictures. I am there to have fun and meet other photographers too.
- I always have my Flick group created weeks before the event.
- Business Card... Always bring a lot of them!!!
I hope that you read all this post and that it helped you in somehow.
See you at your next Photowalk.
