Why Nature and Landscape Photography?

The beauty of photographing Landscape, Nature and Wildlife is that it is always changing into the unexpected. Whilst certain types of photography, like still life, deal with inanimate objects that can be manipulated, nature and landscape photography cannot. When it comes to the natural environment, creatures and the sky cannot be changed by man. Instead, the photographer must learn to work with his environment. The result cannot always be predicted, and that only adds to the excitement of this type of photography.

Landscape photography can be loosely defined as taking pictures of areas of natural beauty. Typical images contain hills and mountains, waterfalls, vast plains and trees. Landscape photography is greatly affected by light, and the sky that is present at the time of the shoot. Stunning landscape images are often used to promote environmental issues and the preservation of wild land.

Nature or wildlife photography focuses on taking pictures of animals and plant life. It documents creatures that live in the wild, from accessible creatures like those in your backyard, to giraffes and lions in African savannahs. Often, the most interesting shots are of animals in their natural habitats, engaging in some activity; eating, hunting, fighting.

Landscape and wildlife photography may seem similar, in that they are both outdoors, but they differ when it comes to photography. Landscape photography requires a lot of patience, sometimes extremely early mornings to catch the best light, whereas the wildlife photographer must be nimble and alert in order to catch an image of the animal before it runs away.

Landscape and Nature are all around us. There is no need to go out and buy lots of expensive studio equipment; all we need is our camera, our hands and most importantly our eyes. It is a wonderful chance to learn a lot more about the art of photography and reconnect with the environment around us.
